FriendFeed
An early social network (2007-2015) that pioneered features like the 'Like' button, aggregating content from various social media platforms into a single, real-time feed.
FriendFeed was a pioneering social networking platform established in 2007 by former Google engineers Bret Taylor, Jim Norris, Paul Buchheit, and Sanjeev Singh. Its core mission was to consolidate the fragmented social media landscape, bringing together friends' online activities from various platforms into a unified, real-time 'news feed.' This meant everything from YouTube videos and blog posts to Twitter messages and Flickr photos could appear in one central stream.
FriendFeed introduced several groundbreaking innovations to the social media world. Most notably, it's widely recognized as one of the first platforms to implement the 'Like' button. It also pioneered the concept of adding comments to status updates and showcased real-time updating feeds, where page content, comments, and likes appeared instantly without a refresh. These features were quite advanced for their time and were often described as harbingers of the future direction of online social interaction.
The platform was acquired by Facebook in 2009 and ultimately shut down in 2015. Although FriendFeed didn't achieve mass market adoption as a standalone product, its innovative spirit and the features it introduced significantly influenced the development of Facebook and made the internet, in general, a much more social and interactive place.
